T.E. Raja Simhan

Chennai , Dec. 8

OPERATIONS at the Chennai Container Terminal came to halt on Wednesday afternoon following a dispute between workers and the management.

Maritime industry sources said the dispute centred on the replacement for a worker who died a few months ago at the terminal following an accident. They added that a solution seemed imminent, and work could resume by late evening.

Following the death of the worker at the terminal, the union wanted his brother to be employed there. The management was willing to do so as soon as a vacancy was available.

Maritime industry sources said that the problem today came after the union wanted the deceased worker's brother to be employed immediately. The management is reported to have reiterated that it would do so once a vacancy was available.
