UNDERWRITERS Laboratories, an independent quality conformity assessment agency, has launched a new programme to help organisations meet the European Union's Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive for electronics manufacturers. The new regulation will be in force with immediate effect.
The programme tests and monitors six substances targeted by the RoHS directive, which includes lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl and polybrominated diphenyl ether. The programme is designed to help companies from a number of industries impacted by RoHS, including appliances, components, consumers electronics, information technology, telecommunications, plastics and wire and cable. It can help original equipment manufacturers monitor the compliance of supply chain partners, reduce the investment associated with internal compliance efforts and identify substitute options.
