Telecommunications LG plans 3G handset launch in March Vinod Mathew
Busan (South Korea) , Dec. 9 LG Electronics will launch its 3G mobile handsets in India by March 2005. While the rollout will commence over the next four months, against the original schedule of January 2005, it may take a little longer before the product actually reaches the consumer. The handsets will be produced at the Pune facility. Speaking to visiting Indian newspersons, LG officials said that the company was looking at selling six million handsets in the first of year of operations. This will be scaled up to 20 million by 2010, by which time the Pune facility would have invested $60 million in manufacturing handsets, the officials said. "The testing of our 3G handsets is under way and they are being tested for operational efficiencies. We expect to formally launch this range by the early part of 2005," an LG official said. LG would be looking to leverage market penetration through the established chain of consumer electronics and home appliances outlets for selling the mobile handsets, he added.
