Chennai , Dec. 9

KE-BURGMANN, a leading manufacturer of expansion joints, is looking at expanding opportunities outside its home, Denmark.

The company's Managing Director, Mr Finn Jacobsen, told presspersons here on Thursday, that it was also shifting out its research and development work to other countries. As a part of this initiative, its subsidiary, KE-Burgmann Flexibles India Pvt Ltd, has signed up with Velammal Engineering College, for development and technical analysis of expansion joint products.

Expansion joints find use in a wide range of industries where gases are handled under high pressure and temperature, including power stations, refineries and pulp and paper manufacture.

Mr Jacobsen said that the company hopes to move more of its R&D work to India and is also looking at it as a supplier of materials. Initially, it has been looking at India for its fabric and servicing requirement, now R&D, and for purchasing materials. It has bought Indian steel for a project in Iran.

According to Mr D. Lahiri, Managing Director, KE-Burgmann Flexibles, the Danish company is an industry leader in manufacture and use of fabric, rubber and steel expansion joints, and the tie-up with Velammal Engineering College will focus on fabric expansions. The Indian subsidiary will invest Rs 2 crore initially, and depending on the research and market development the scope of the agreement will be widened. The engineering college has the infrastructure and expertise needed, he said.

The Chairman of the Velammal group of institutions, Mr M.V. Muthuramalingam, said that the tie-up with Burgmann would give students exposure to developments in industry and hands-on training in research.
