Kerala to use satellites to track smugglers

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Forest Minister, Mr K.P. Viswanathan, has said that his department is probing the possibility of using satellite technology to check sandalwood smuggling and ganja cultivation.

The Minister told newspersons here that consultations for this were already on with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The idea was to get all the sandal trees in Marayur Sandal Reserve marked with embedded chips so that the logged-out tree can be tracked to its destination with the help of satellite signals. The smugglers can thus be apprehended.

Mr Viswanathan recalled the fact that the idea of putting satellite images into use was mooted by him the last time he functioned as the Forest Minister.
