Mumbai , Dec. 10

THE three-day Ellora Aurangabad Festival, which kicks off at Sohneri Mahal in Aurangabad on Saturday, hopes to attract 30,000 visitors this year.

According to an official release, the festival hopes to provide visitors an insight into the city's culture and heritage through classical dance recitals, folk dances, hasya kavi sammelans, ghazals, etc, by senior artistes such as Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Pt Jasraj, and Hariharan.

The festival will also showcase local handlooms and handicrafts including Paithani, Himroo, Bidri, and Paperwork.

The organisers have included a heritage walk for senior citizens, marathons, and interschool and intercollegiate competitions, as part of the festival.

The official release quoting Mr K. Bhoge, Divisional Commissioner and Chairman of the festival, said:

"Specialised agencies have been appointed to handle the activities of the Ellora Aurangabad Festival, to infuse professionalism into the event. The aim is to restore Aurangabad's cultural and industrial appeal."

The festival is being organised by the Aurangabad Festival Committee, which includes, among others, the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, the Centre's Tourism Department, the Aurangabad Hotel and Restaurant Association, the Tourism Promoters Guild, the Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture, and INTACH.

The festival, it is hoped, will serve as a driving force in the overall promotion of Aurangabad as a tourist destination.

Towards this end, the organising committee is promoting the festival aggressively. Local associations, art institutions, and the local people have extended their support to make the event a success, the release added.
