Airtel offers location access services

AIRTEL on Monday launched location access services (LAS) for its customers in Karnataka. LAS will be available to prepaid as well as post-paid customers.

Mr Shankaralinge Gowda, Secretary, Department of IT, Biotechnology, Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka, formally inaugurated the service.

Mr Deepak Mehrotra, COO - Bharti Cellular Ltd, Karnataka said, the LAS will currently offer customers details of 10 services nearest to their current location, including police stations, hospitals, ambulance services, water bill payment centres, 24-hour chemists, ATMs, cinema halls, restaurants, pubs and bars, Airtel cash collection centres for postpaid customers and Airtel cheque drop boxes.

Currently, LAS will be available to Airtel customers in Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Manipal, Udipi, Hubli, Dharwad, Belgaum, Shimoga, Davangere and Bijapur, and will be later on expanded to other major cities across the State. To avail of this service, a customer has to send a short code (POL - police station, HOS - hospital, AMB - ambulance, WATERBILL - water bill payment centre, MED - 24-hour chemist, ATM - ATMs, CINE - cinema hall, RES - restaurant, PUB - pubs and bars, AIRTELCASH - Airtel cash collection centre, AIRTELCHQ - Airtel cheque drop box, MORE - to get more records) to 4242, a pre-designated number and the return SMS will indicate 3 records of the service requested.

This service has been launched in association with Sarayu Telecom.

LAS will also offer a unique feature - BUDDY SEARCH where a subscriber could invite and create groups and by sending a locate message 4242, he can get the location of his buddy.

A buddy can be added only on prior acceptance from the other person and also offers the option of switching to invisible mode if the subscriber chooses to do so.

Airtel is Karnataka's largest cellular service provider with a customer base of 1.09 million. It has presence in 226 towns.
