Off-shore Development `Indian IT cos should tap East European talent' Moumita Bakshi
New Delhi , Dec. 13 URGING Indian IT companies to adopt an aggressive `empire building' approach, IT entrepreneur and member Board of Trustees (BOT) of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), Mr Kanwal Rekhi today said that Indian players should tap the existing talent pool in Eastern European nations to target the European market. "Indians are not looking at East Europe seriously enough. Indian IT companies need to set up shop there... I feel we are not tapping the talent pool," Mr Rekhi said. He said while Indian players had developed processes and acquired strong brand equity, the Eastern European nations had an edge in algorithms and mathematics. "Indian companies need to acquire resources or set up shop in Ukraine, Hungary and Bulgaria and Romania," he said. He said Indian IT services players should adopt a similar approach for Chinese market too. On the issue of opposition to outsourcing in US and Europe, which has lately been subsiding, he said, "The US dependence on Indian IT talent is absolute so I do not believe that outsourcing will go away soon. In fact going forward, I see Indian IT professionals increasingly handling high end services work from US like design jobs, consulting jobs and research," he said. "US is not producing enough engineers and they have to rely on engineers from India and China. On the other hand, the supply of manpower, especially skilled manpower, is abundant in India. Hence in the next few years I see the centre of gravity shifting to India and Indian professionals defining what the world needs," he added. Mr Rekhi also expressed concern on labour laws in India, and sought opening up of FDI caps in various sectors.
