Trade & Labour Unions Trailer drivers' stir hits box movement at Chennai terminal Raja Simhan T.E.
Chennai , Dec. 14 A STRIKE by trailer drivers and cleaners has affected movement of boxes in and out of the Chennai container terminal since early morning. They are protesting against an alleged assault by an employee of the Chennai Container Terminal Ltd (CCTL), the private terminal operator, of one of the drivers, said sources. Following the strike, export boxes could not be brought into the terminal, and import boxes are getting piled up inside the terminal. Further, there is a long queue of trailers, loaded with containers, waiting inside and outside the terminal, the sources said. This is the second time in the last one week that work in the terminal has been obstructed. It may be recalled that last Wednesday, operations at the terminal came to a halt following a dispute between CCTL workers and the management, and that was an internal problem at CCTL. This time, CCTL employees continue to work, and the CCTL management is trying to resolve the problem with the trailer drivers and cleaners, the source said. "Such disruptions are affecting the trade badly, and also sending a wrong signal to the international trade looking at bringing cargo through Chennai. When things were going smooth in the terminal for the last couple of months, there are disruptions in work over smaller issues, which is not good for the terminal and for the trade," said a maritime industry source.
