ONGC to finalise manning exercise by next month

Pratim Ranjan Bose

Kolkata. Dec. 14

ONGC is expecting to finalise its manning exercise by next month, the exercise being directed at benchmarking manpower requirement in different areas and finding ways to redeploy manpower.

Talking to Business Line, Dr A.K. Balyan, Director (HR, business development and joint venture ) said that the company had previously found 4,500 employees excess. Accordingly, two voluntary retirement schemes were rolled out the during last two years which, however, failed to generate adequate response as just 1,340 employees took up the scheme.

"As the voluntary retirement schemes are drawn as per guidelines set by the Department of Public Enterprises, we could not make them lucrative enough," Dr Balyan said.

"Having a wide range of business involvements and employing approximately 37,000 people, we need to know whether we are close to international standards in terms of manpower deployment in each of our activities," Dr Balyan said.

He said that, "In some areas the company is slightly overstaffed, and in a few areas there are too many people."

On the company's proposed entry into the oil retailing sector, he said that apart from the normal problems related to land acquisition, things were progressing fast.

"Entry into retailing is sure and certain in this fiscal, and we are about to finalise a few locations." It may be mentioned that together with MRPL, ONGC holds licences for 1600 retail outlets.
