Cabinet to consider Hyderabad airport pact today

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 14

THE proposed greenfield airport in Hyderabad could soon become a reality. The concession agreement for the airport is expected to be considered by the Union Cabinet at its meeting scheduled to be held here on Wednesday.

The new greenfield airport is a joint venture project between the GMR Group, Malaysian Airports, the Government of Andhra Pradesh and Airports Authority of India (AAI). The first phase of the project is expected to cost close to Rs 1,400 crore.

The approval of the concession agreement by the Union Cabinet would pave the way for the proposed airport project to begin work. The Union Cabinet has already given its consent to the concession agreement for another greenfield airport to come up at Bangalore. The concession agreement for the proposed greenfield airport at Bangalore was signed here in July this year.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, on Wednesday informed the Rajya Sabha that various airlines owed the AAI more than Rs 757 crore till the end of September this year.

While Indian Airlines owes AAI more than Rs 382.41 crore, Air India owes the authority more than Rs 94.96 crore. The Minister also told the Rajya Sabha that Jet Airways owed AAI Rs 17.87 crore, while Air Sahara owed Rs 8.56 crore. Similarly, foreign airlines owe AAI more than Rs 112.75 crore.
