Co-operative sector

The editorial, ``Governments must co-operate'' (Business Line, December 14) rightly points out that the problem facing co-operative entities is the lack of professionalism. It seems that the entire Nehruvian concept that the ``co-operatives were to be decentralised, community-oriented alternatives to both communism and free enterprise'' is negated. The only exception to this, perhaps, is the dairy sector in Gujarat, which still maintains the vibrancy of the co-operative sector.

Dual administration ruins every system and that is exactly what has happened to the co-operative societies/banks. Co-operative banks have fallen prey to the foul plays of vested interests across the country.

The government should release co-operative banks from the clutches of the state-run co-operative sector and bring themunder the control of the RBI.

Management and employees must given modern training to keep abreast of present day requirements.
