Environment Decision on Pampa Authority hailed Our Bureau
Kochi , Dec. 15 THE Pampa Parirakshana Samithi (PPS), a voluntary environmental organisation, has welcomed the State Cabinet's decision on Wednesday to set up a Pampa River Development Authority (PRDA) for implementing the Pampa Action Plan (PAP) under the National River Conservation Programme (NRCP). The Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, announced the Cabinet decision to set up the Authority for implementing PAP. The PPS has been urging the Government for over a year to set up a Pampa River Basin Development Authority, as it is inevitable for the scientific and systematic implementation of the scheme, Mr N.K. Sukumaran Nair, General Secretary, PPS, said. The State Cabinet has at last realised the necessity of setting up such a body, he said. The project, under the National River Conservation Programme has been pending despite the fact that the Centre had allocated funds in May last year to commence the first phase of the Rs 320-crore project. The NRCP Directorate had already approved the first phase of project involving an expenditure of Rs 18.45 crore and it had sanctioned the Centre's (70 per cent) share of Rs 12.90 crore. The allocation was for carrying out 11 pollution abatement works at Sabarimala and Pampa. The Centre has also paid Rs 75 lakh to the State Government in March 2004 as advance. The Government, in November 2003, selected the Kerala Water Authority as the nodal agency for implementation and accorded sanction for implementing seven works by the Travancore Devaswom Board and four by the water resources department.
