Power `Conservation is key to meeting energy needs' Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Dec. 14 CONSERVATION will prove to be an effective strategy to meet the imposing demand for energy in the coming years, according to the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry. At a seminar here on Tuesday, Mr O.P. Goenka, the President of FAPCCI, said the demand for commercial energy is expected to increase by 2.5 times in 2020. He called for a change in the attitude of people to make conservation a supplement to the increasing capacities in power generation. "There is an urgent need to train and appraise the means and processes for conservation of energy," he said. The Chairman of FAPCCI's Energy Committee, Mr Y. Harish Chandra Prasad, said nearly 30 per cent of energy can be saved in the agricultural sector by making certain changes in pumpsets. The onus is on the top management of organisations, he said. "They should optimise each activity with respect to its required function. Operating systems must be closely monitored and extensive data must be recorded, interpreted, analysed and critically examined," said Mr Prasad, who is also the Managing Director of Lanco Kondapalli Power. The focus should be on energy delivery, storage and handling systems, he added. The Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Non-Conventional Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Ltd (NEDCAP), Mr S.E. Sekhar Babu, said there is huge potential in non-conventional energy sources. For one, there is potential for 800 MW of wind energy as against the present 100 MW. Mini-hydel projects and municipal solid waste, too, are good sources for alternative energy, he said.
