AP Govt rejects demand for CBI probe into irrigation contracts

Hyderabad , Dec. 15

THE State Government has rejected the Opposition Telugu Desam Legislature Party (TDLP) demand for a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities in the tenders for irrigation projects.

Replying to a marathon debate in the State Assembly on Wednesday, the Minister for Major Irrigation, Mr Ponnala Lakshmaiah, also rejected the TDLP demand for placing files pertaining to the tenders before the Speaker of the House.

Amid frequent interruptions, the Minister asserted that there were no irregularities in finalising tenders and sought to turn the tables on the TDLP accusing it of trying to "obstruct irrigation projects."

The awarding of the first phase of irrigation works, worth over Rs 10,000 crore, to nine companies has been the bone of contention, with the TDLP alleging favouritism, corruption and violation of norms in the deal and the Government contending that finalisation of pre-qualified tenders was done in accordance with the rules.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, appealed to the Opposition members not to obstruct the construction of irrigation projects. He also brought to the notice of the House various irrigation projects for which the previous Telugu Desam Government had laid the foundation stone but had not taken up construction works.

TDLP members Mr T. Devender Goud and Mr Y. Ramakrishnudu said there was a need to summon the Advocate General to clarify the position on the High Court observations on the tenders' issue.

The opposition members also moved a motion on summoning the Advocate General and pressed for division. However, the Speaker, Mr K.R. Suresh Reddy, rejected the plea.

A total of 18 members spoke on the issue in the Assembly over the past week. On Wednesday, the issue was debated for six hours before the House was abruptly adjourned for the day amidst chaos.
