Petroleum Diesel sales up after dry patch Our Bureau
Kolkata , Dec. 18 AFTER more than ayear-long lean patch, diesel sales have once again gone up. According to sources in Indian Oil Corporation, since August this year, the oil industry is witnessing a rise in sales of diesel, registering a 10-per cent growth compared to the corresponding period last year. Diesel consumption dropped by around 3.5 per cent in 2003-04. According to IOC sources, the downtrend continued till August this year, registering a marginal drop in sales by 0.2 per cent. While the country is seeing a rise in diesel consumption, sales in West Bengal have so far dropped by 3.5 per cent this fiscal. IOC sources say the drop is a direct impact of high sales tax and imposition of cess on petrol and diesel by the State Government. "The price of fuel is higher in West Bengal compared to the neighbouring States in the eastern and north eastern region; accordingly long distance truckers prefer to refill their vehicles in those States," sources say.
