Software Staff cost up on aggressive hiring Raja Simhan T. E
Chennai , Dec. 19 THE doemstic IT sector is on a boom and firms are hiring employees at a rapid pace, be it on the college campuses or the open market. And this has pushed up staff cost for top IT companies for the quarter ended September 30. Among the top five IT players, including Wipro Ltd, employee addition was around 18,000 during the quarter. The combined employee strength of the top IT players at the end of the quarter was around 1.50 lakh, including 40,948 employees in TCS, 37,063 in Wipro and 32,949 in Infosys, according to figures collated by Business Line. IT companies saw their staff cost increasing significantly during the September quarter against the same period last year. For instance, Infosys spent Rs 779 crore on staff cost during the September 2004 quarter, against Rs 567 crore during the same period last year. Similarly, staff cost for Satyam Computer increased to Rs 486 crore during (Rs 304 crore quarter), and for HCL Technologies it was Rs 114 crore (Rs 88 crore). Wipro added 5,546 employees - 3,282 for IT services and 2,264 for IT-enabled service. Infosys added 5,010 employees during the quarter. TCS followed with 3,974 employees. HCL Technologies added 2,116 employees during the September quarter. This is a new record of quarterly employee addition for the company. An industry source said companies would continue to be aggressive in hiring and this trend of increasing staff cost would continue in the next few quarters.
