Exporters keep off Coonoor tea sale

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Dec. 19

ELECTRONIC auction continued to be less attractive at the weekly sale held at the Coonoor Tea Trade Association.

In the outcry sale No: 51 that followed, 14.57 lakh kg were offered for sale. But, the exporters thoroughly disappointed the producers. "The total absence of export buying is intriguing, but some exporters contend that they were disappointed by the raw treatment meted out to the Libyan exporters. In any case, this would be disastrous in the mid-term," an auctioneer told Business Line.

Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) and Godfrey Philips also bought such quality teas. Tata Tea was active on the better medium smaller dust grades.

CTC brokens eased Rs 2 over the previous week. Nilgiris dusts on the contrary gained Rs 2. CTC dusts eased a rupee. In all, some 60,000 kg were sold for over Rs 60 a kg. Darmona estate got the highest price of Rs 80 a kg amidst the bought leaf factories selling CTC teas. Hittakkal Estate and Sree Ram Supreme came a distant second at Rs 68.

Quotations with the brokers indicated a range of Rs 39-40 for the lain dust grades and Rs 63-65 for the bright liquoring category. The plain leaf category fetched Rs 37-39 while the brighter liquoring teas got Rs 60-63.
