Coconut & Copra Kerafed to diversify into other products Our Bureau
Kochi , Dec. 19 THE Kerala Coconut Growers Cooperative Federation (Kerafed) as part of its diversification programme would set up a desiccated coconut, coconut cream and milk, manufacturing unit at Vytilla here at a cost of Rs 5.40 crore. The foundation stone for the unit was laid on Sunday by the Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy. The Kerafed, which was set up in 1987 with assistance from the then European Economic Community, National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) and the state government, has been manufacturing `Kera' brand coconut oil and ayurvedic coconut thailam, `Kerakesh'. Now it will enter into manufacturing other coconut products, the Chief Minister said at the function presided over by the Agriculture Minister, Ms K.R. Gauri Amma. The total estimated cost of the unit being set up with financial assistance from the NCDC will be Rs 5.40 crore. The unit will have the capacity to manufacture 1,000 tonne of desiccated coconut, 2,100 tonne of coconut cream and 3,000 tonne of coconut milk. In order to ensure availability of raw material for the unit, Kerafed will set up coconut procurement centres in all the districts and buy 50,000 to one lakh coconuts directly from the farmers through each centre. As against the sales of 4,250 tonne of coconut oil under its Kera brand in 2003-04 Kerafed is targeting to market 12,000 tonne in the current fiscal, Kerafed officials said.
