Kochi , Dec.19

THE National Mission on Bamboo Application (NMBA) has offered to support Kerala in setting up a unit to manufacture bamboo mat glass fibre composites.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a national seminar on Integrate Development of Bamboo in Kerala, the NMBA Mission Coordinator, Mr S.K. Pandey, said that the production mix of the proposed unit would range from wall panels, roofing sheets to door panels.

"Kerala has already developed an expertise in bamboo mats. We wanted to explore the possibility of using the same for new products," Mr Pandey said. Detailed discussions are expected between the NMBA officials and the Kerala State Bamboo Mission. We are open to the idea of having the unit in the private sector or in the joint sector, the Mission coordinator added.

Inaugurating the seminar, the Kerala State Industries Secretary and Managing Director of the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation, Mr P.H. Kurien, urged the government to treat bamboo as a plantation crop. He said that this would help to increase the raw material availability and help the sector to develop in a sustainable manner.

The usage of bamboo continues to be restricted to low value added applications, Mr J.K. Sharma, Director of the Kerala Forest Research Institute, pointed out. But there is tremendous untapped potential in this product, a press releases issued here has said.

Kerala is targeting to plant 80,000 hectares with bamboo outside the forest region in the state during the next three years, Mr C P John, Member of the State Planning Board said.

In order to achieve this target, the mission proposes to rope in participatory forest management communities, self-help groups and non-governmental groups to take up and manage these new plantations.
