Transmission losses hit water supply to RINL

Visakhapatnam , Dec. 20

WATER supply to Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd's Visakhapatnam Steel Plant through the Yeleru canal has been affected due to heavy transmission losses.

The water level in the Kanithi balancing reservoir is gradually coming down, causing concern to the plant authorities. It is apprehended that any further fall in water level may affect production.

In a statement on Monday, the authorities said that during the past six months supply had been hit in spite of the de-weeding works taken up by the State Irrigation Department to clear the canal.

Inflows into the balancing reservoir during November had dwindled due to pilferages and diversion of water to the Pampa reservoir from the canal.

During the past few months, water supply to the plant was highly erratic, forcing the plant to draw water from its storage reservoir to meet its daily needs.

Water supply was stopped altogether from December 14. Right now, water is not being released from the Yeleru reservoir in East Godavari and there is no pumping of water from the Godavari either, the authorities said.

They added that as the pipeline had been laid by L&T, which is executing the Visakhapatnam Industrial Water Supply Scheme, the Government should take an early decision.

The Rs 350-crore Visakhapatnam Industrial Water Supply Scheme, to which RINL contributed Rs 100 crore, had been held up due to a controversy over the role of L&T in the implementation of the scheme. Otherwise, the scheme should have become operational by now.

The Government recently appointed a Cabinet sub-committee to review the scheme, conceived and taken up by the previous TDP Government. The sub-committee met last week in Hyderabad, but the outcome is not known.

In view of the water crisis, the plant authorities have appealed to the State Government to expedite supply of Godavari waters to the plant through the Yeleru canal.
