Govt initiates steps to improve tourism sector

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 22

THE Government has initiated a major exercise to improve tourism infrastructure in coordination with the concerned Ministries, the Minister for Tourism, Ms Renuka Chowdhury, said here on Wednesday.

Addressing the Consultative Committee meeting attached to the Ministry of Tourism, the Minister said that a result-oriented approach was being adopted to improve road connectivity to all major tourist destinations and heritage sites. Besides, there was also a move to improve on shore infrastructure for berthing of cruise ships.

The Minister said that the Ministry had taken up a host of issues with the concerned authorities, including the need of increasing scheduled airline capacity, upgradation of airport infrastructure, rationalisation of tourist transport taxes and the setting up of budget hotels in 100 identified tourist sites with private sector participation.

A task force has been set up to develop berthing places for small cruise liners all along the coast apart from which five ports, including Mumbai and Mormugao, have been identified for introduction of cruises between Mumbai and Goa, she said.
