It has decided to rollout 100 new cell sites across the State in the next 100 days, taking the total number of cell sites to nearly 300.

Coimbatore , Dec. 22

BPL Mobile, which has put its financial woes behind after the financial closure achieved last year, is in a growth mode and plans to double its customer base in the next six months in Tamil Nadu circle.

The company, which had invested about Rs 100 crore in last six months in improving its network and extending coverage, plans to invest Rs 75 crore in the coming months.

Speaking at a news conference in Coimbatore on Wednesday, Mr K.A. Mohamed Saleem, Chief Operating Officer (South-covering Tamil Nadu and Kerala), and Mr R. Suresh Kumar, COO, Tamil Nadu Circle, BPL Mobile, said after the company tied up its long-term debt financing in August last year, it has been on an aggressive growth path, launching new products like one-second billing, establishing new cell sites to bring new towns under its network and to improve the quality of service in its existing network areas etc. This has paid rich dividends as BPL Mobile has seen the number of subscribers doubling from 1.90 lakh in November 2003 to 3.82 lakh in November 2004 in the Tamil Nadu circle. Now it has decided to rollout 100 new cell sites across the State in the next 100 days, taking the total number of cell sites to nearly 300. This would help it to double its network capacity and it has a target of doubling the customer base from the existing level in the next six months. This would involve an investment of over Rs 75 crore.

Mr Suresh Kumar said during the month of November 2004 alone, BPL Mobile saw enrolment of nearly 75,000 new customers under its pre-paid plan that he termed as the largest ever recorded by any GSM Mobile phone operator in the circle in that month. BPL Mobile, which has a switching centre in Coimbatore and Madurai, is establishing one more centre in Coimbatore that would be operational early next month to reduce network congestion. It has also lined up new value added services like GPRS and multimedia messaging (MMS) for launch in the circle.

Mr Saleem said the company had invested about Rs 100 crore in the last six months in Tamil Nadu circle as part of its expansion work.
