Singareni Day

A. Roy Chowdhury

A group of miners of the 115-year old Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) coming out of a mine in Kothagudem in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh. December 23 is celebrated as `Singareni Day', to symbolise mining activity that started this day in 1889 in village Singareni, under the Hyderabad Deccan Coal Company owned by a group of private investors, who renamed it as SCCL in 1920 and also listed it on the London Stock Exchange. In 1945, the Nizam of Hyderabad purchased the shares of SCCL from these investors. Since 1960, it is jointly owned by the AP Government and the Centre with equity of 51:49.
