Strategy Park Hotels plans more Flurys outlets Our Bureau
Kolkata , Dec. 22 NEARLY eight decades after it was established on fashionable Park Street in Kolkata, Flurys, the legendary, stand alone tearoom now owned by The Park Hotels group, is all set to expand in Kolkata and other select cities in the country. The tearoom, which was established in 1926 by Mr and Ms J. Flury, has been one of Kolkata's best-known landmarks famous for exotic cakes, creamy pastries, rich puddings and "perhaps the best Swiss chocolates outside the European continent". After three-and-a-half months of closure to facilitate renovation and re-design, the "popular meeting place for all ages" was opened to the public once again today. The outlet's current design has been inspired by designs of popular European cafes of the 1930s, albeit with modern, contemporary features. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Vijay Dewan, Managing Director of The Park Hotels, said the Flurys brand would be rolled out in other parts of Kolkata and other cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, Visakhapanam and Chennai to begin with. The Park Hotels already has properties in these cities. "We are currently working on a franchisee model which we hope to put in place in the next three to four months. Thereafter, we shall be in a position to roll out the Flurys brand," Mr Dewan said. Each of these proposed franchisee outlets would have a tearoom with take-away facilities. It was too early to zero in on the likely investment in each outlet, Mr Dewan said. According to him, before Flurys was shut for re-design, the tearoom generated a revenue of Rs 2 crore annually. The expectations on this score now were higher. "Flurys has been a destination on Park Street for decades. More than revenue generation, the initiative behind the new-look Flurys was to enhance the value proposition of this most happening street," Mr Dewan said. The Park Hotels group, which clocked a turnover of Rs 103 crore in 2003-04, has targeted a turnover of Rs 140 crore in the year ending March 31, 2005, according to Mr Dewan.
