Special purpose vehicle to be floated for Hyderabad MMTS

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Dec. 22

A SPECIAL purpose vehicle will be floated to put in place an efficient Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) envisaged to ease pressure on Hyderabad roads.

The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has taken a decision on Wednesday to float a 50:50 joint venture between the State Government and the Indian Railways in this regard. The SPV would raise Rs 1,000 crore to make MMTS a success.

In the first phase, Andhra Pradesh and Railways would put in Rs 150 crore each for the project.

The joint venture company would have a Chief Executive Officer (a Chief Secretary level officer), a Managing Director and directors (finance, administration and marketing).

Briefing newspersons on the decisions taken at the Cabinet meeting, Mr Mohammad Shabbir Ali, Minister for Information and Public Relations, said the joint venture company would take care of all the issues, including coordination between various State and Central Government organisations, related to the MMTS.

Free electricity: On free power, the Cabinet has given full powers to the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to take a final decision. Dr Reddy would convene an all-part meeting on the issue on Monday (December 27).

Naxalites issue: The Cabinet skipped the issue of extending ceasefire agreement with naxalites. The ceasefire expired on December 16, casting shadows over the future of talks with the CPI (Maoist) and CPI (ML-Janashakti).

"The issue has not come up for discussion," the Minister asserted.

Human rights panel: The Cabinet also gave its nod to set up the State Human Rights Commission that would supersede Human Rights Committee.

A retired Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court would head the Commission. A retired High Court Judge and former district judge would be members of the Commission. Two others with knowledge of human rights would also be put on the panel.

A committee, headed by the Chief Minister, would recommend a panel of names to the Governor for appointing the Commission.
