Working conditions of Rly staff may affect train safety: Report

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 23

EVEN as the recent train accident has once again heightened the realisation for urgent safety and security measures, a Parliamentary panel has apprehended that existing working condition of the operational staff would affect the safety in train operations.

As per the latest report by Standing Committee on Railways on safety and security in Indian Railways the operational staffs end up working for long hours, ranging from 22-24 hours in the case of gang men and even five consecutive days at times for drivers, the committee pointed out.

Recommending that the running staff should not be put on duty for over eight hours, the committee has called for reviewing the present ten-hour roster system.

The committee, which tabled its report in the Parliament on Wednesday, has also recommended that Railways should ensure crew friendly cabs with basic amenities and features that would ensure fatigue free driving for long hours.
