THE Commissionerate of Agriculture, Government of Tamil Nadu, on Thursday unveiled its plan to link agricultural offices across the State over the next couple of years.

To be executed in two phases by 2007, the project aims to get relevant information to the average farmer in his village so that productivity increases and he is able to get the best price possible.

According to Mr Jagmohan Singh Raju, Commissioner of Agriculture, "The project, termed TN-AGRISNET, will involve the set up of network infrastructure and connectivity between the Commissionerate and the 28 district offices in the first phase. The second phase of the project will look to establish connectivity nodes in the 384 block offices across the State."

The total project costs is estimated to be about Rs 70 crore.

Mr M. Moni, deputy Director-General, National Informatics Centre, said, "Thrust areas in this endeavour would be creating databases to aid in forecasting of climate and rainfall, pest management and nutrient management."

He added that the ultimate aim of the project would be to set up an agriculture information centre "in every village of the State".
