Telecommunications BSNL Karnataka to double mobile connections Our Bureau
Mangalore , Dec. 23 THE Karnataka Telecom Circle of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is planning to double the capacity of mobile connections in the next six months. The existing capacity of the circle is 7.2 lakh connections, and it has 6.42 lakh mobile customers. Presiding over a function to release the `Telephone Directory 2004-05 of Dakshina Kannada Telecom District' in Mangalore on Thursday, Mr S. Ramaganapathy, Chief General Manager of Karnataka Telecom Circle, said that BSNL is planning to increase the capacity of mobile connections by another eight lakh in the next six months. The process will begin in February and continue till June. Added to this, 600 base terminal stations will be set up in the State. In Dakshina Kannada, 59 base stations will be set up and mobile telephone services will be introduced in 35 more towns. He said the CellOne mobile service covers the highways and railway line in the State in a big manner. Following this, BSNL's mobile telephone service is available in a majority of rural areas. Mr Ramaganapathy said that BSNL, which has mobile switching centres in Bangalore and Hubli, would set up two more centres in Bangalore and one in Mangalore soon. Work is in progress in this regard, he added. The Karnataka Circle is planning to give 49,000 connections in rural areas to meet the demand. Modern wireless technologies such as CorDECT and CDMA are being used for this purpose, he added. The Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank, Mr V.K. Chopra, released the telephone directory on the occasion. Dr Ramdas Pai, Chairman of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, released the directory in CD format.
