TVS & Sons Chairman Ramachandran dead
Chennai , Dec. 24.
MR R. Ramachandran, Chairman of T.V. Sundram Iyengar & Sons Ltd, the parent company of the TVS group, died in Madurai on Friday after a brief illness.
He was 74 and leaves behind his wife, a daughter and three sons.
Mr Ramachandran, son of the late T.S. Rajam and grandson of T.V. Sundaram Iyengar, founder of the TVS group, was born on November 17, 1930 at Srirangam in Tamil Nadu.
An alumnus of the American College, Madurai, he had extensive training in dealership management in General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan, USA, during 1956-57.
With his knowledge and standing in the automobile industry, Mr Ramachandran contributed in a large measure to the growth of the company.
He was on the board of a number of TVS group companies, including Sundaram Industries Ltd, Singer TVS and Sundaram Finance.
In the early 1960s, his emphasis on human relations and a proper work culture distinguished the company from other institutions and earned a reputation for TVS as a forerunner in introducing welfare measures for employees.
Mr Ramachandran was interested in the development of Madurai and he continuously attempted to inculcate a sense of road safety among both pedestrians and motorists.
A keen photographer, he pursued it as more than a hobby.
He was a philanthropist and was President of TVS Charities and also headed Lakshmi Vidya Sangam, the managing committee of various TVS schools in Madurai.
Mr Ramachandran's children are involved with various TVS group companies.
His daughter, Ms Shobhana Ramachandran, is the Managing Director of TVS Srichakra Ltd, while one son, Mr R. Naresh, is the executive Vice-Chairman of the company.
Another son, Mr R. Haresh is the Joint Managing Director of TVS & Sons, Mr R. Dinesh is its Executive Director.
