Cabinet defers decision on Patents Bill

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 24

THE Cabinet today deferred a decision on the crucial Patents (Third Amendment) Bill, which would have paved the way for having in place a product patent regime by January 1.

It discussed various options, including the implications of not complying with TRIPs (Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights) agreement of the World Trade Organisation.

Speaking to newspersons after the Cabinet meeting, the Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, said, "The Cabinet discussed the Patent Amendment Bill. Various options have been discussed to meet our obligations under the TRIPs agreement, but no decision was taken."

Asked about an Ordinance, he said, "Parliament has been adjourned sine die. A decision will be taken in due course and shortly."
