Taj Leisure Hotels to focus on eco tourism

Sankar Radhakrishnan

Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 25

THE leisure division of the Taj group of hotels is open to strategic expansions, especially in areas that are already established on the tourism map or are emerging tourist destinations, said Mr Jamshed S. Daboo, Chief Operating Officer, Taj Leisure Hotels.

The company recently signed an agreement to develop a hotel in Bhutan and just opened new properties in Gwalior and Kovalam near Thiruvananthapuram, he said.

Given the country's tremendous potential in eco-tourism, the company will focus on this facet of tourism, said Mr Daboo. Beach tourism and cultural tourism have reached a certain level of maturity, and it is areas such as eco-tourism, wildlife tourism and adventure tourism that enhance the resort experience, he added.

In fact, the company has entered into a partnership with Conservation Corporation Africa to launch a wildlife tourism initiative, Mr Daboo said.

The effort at properties run by the Taj group is to create experiences that offer guests an opportunity to savour the local ethos, said Mr Daboo.

Domestic tourism is increasing. At hotels operated by the company's leisure division, the number of Indian guests often equals the number of international guests, he said. Tourists, particularly Indians, are spending more, added Mr Daboo.
