Nortel bullish on packet code gear

WITH convergence in the telecom sector and pressure on available spectrum, particularly wireless applications, Nortel Networks, one of the leading telecom infrastructure providers, is upbeat on the market for its innovative multi-crore packet code in India.

Nortel is partnering with several large networks in the region to help them switch to a multi-service packet core that enables carriers to transport voice and data and also handles Internet Protocol traffic at one go on the same network.

The Senior Product Manager of Nortel Networks India, Mr Shubh Agarwal, handling the wireless business, told Business Line that operators are today faced with the challenge of providing messaging, e-mail, video streaming and other value addition through the same platform, while optimising infrastructure investments.

Mobile operators typically run a multitude of tasks carrying both external (customer facing) as well as internal (management, billing or inter-departmental) traffic in addition to 2G and 3G applications. Through a common backbone, operators would be able to reduce their costs. This backbone requires a unified multi-service packet core architecture support to be able to process each of these applications with their unique needs"..
