Rlys extends assistance for tsunami-hit States

PLEDGING all possible support to the Governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, hit by tsunami, the Ministry of Railways has deputed railway doctors to reinforce the State Governments' health facilities and has decided to give priority in booking and transportation of relief personnel.

The Indian Railways will also provide services of railway scouts and civil defence personnel as volunteers to support the local relief operations.

Additionally, it would extend assistance of essential items such as blankets, clothing and plastic sheets from the Railway Minister's Welfare and Relief Fund at specific locations.

It will also assist in transportation of relief material to affected sites from various parts of the country within the Central Government guidelines, said an official statement.

Moreover, the General Managers of Southern and South-Central Railways have been asked to coordinate relief efforts with the local State Governments and crisis management teams.
