Death toll in AP rises to 90; 154 fishermen missing

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Dec. 27

THE death toll rose to 90 in Sunday's tsunami onslaught on Andhra Pradesh, with 154 fishermen still reported missing. Fishermen have been asked not to go fishing for at least two days as the State monitors the situation.

The loss to property has been put at Rs 32.71 crore.

Though 3,000 houses were damaged or destroyed in Sunday's devastating tidal waves, the State Government has decided to construct 40,000 houses to fishermen who were most vulnerable.

Addressing a press conference at the airport here after his visit to Nellore and West Godavari districts on Monday, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy, said his Government would construct 20,000 houses, while seeking Central help for constructing 20,000 more.

"We have asked district collectors to send us a report on how best we can make the fishermen take up their work again at the earliest," Dr Reddy said.

He said a large number of fishermen had lost their means of livelihood by losing their nets and boats. However, he said the situation was under control. Dr Reddy praised the administration, which, he said, was working overtime to extend relief.

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and the Congress (I) President, Ms Sonia Gandhi, will visit the State in the next three days. "The Prime Minister is coming on Wednesday to Gannavaram Airport in Vijayawada where he would review the situation. Later, he would visit the affected areas in West Godavari, Krishna and Guntur, before leaving for Tamil Nadu," he said. Ms Sonia Gandhi will visit the State the following day. She may visit Prakasam and Nellore districts.

Earlier, addressing a press conference, Mr A. Misra, Relief Commissioner, said Krishna recorded the maximum number of deaths at 35 and Prakasam at 27. As many as 1.30 lakh families, mostly in the districts of Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna, were affected.
