Navy intensifies rescue operations

THE Eastern Naval Command intensified rescue and relief operations along the coast on Monday, the second day after the tsunami wave and earthquake, according to a press release issued by the authorities.
As part of the disaster management, the Eastern Naval Command deployed more ships with large quantities of relief material and essentials. Medical teams, with essential medicines, were sent in the ships. Ten naval aircraft were also sent on search missions from the north Andhra coast to the South Tamil Nadu coast.
Naval ships were also sent to the Andaman and Nicobar islands and Sri Lanka.
Fishermen here did not go out into the sea today, as authorities warned them to keep off till the return of normalcy.
Mr N. Janardhana Reddy, the member of the Lok Sabha from Visakhapatnam, said he would make all efforts to help the fishermen affected by the calamity after the preparation of damage assessment report.
Fisherwomen on their part took out a procession on Monday to the temple of Goddess Gangamma in front of the fishing harbour with pots of turmeric water and neem leaves to pacify the Goddess and quieten the sea.
