IN an effort to facilitate the relief work in the areas hit by the tsunami, Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd is shifting one more Dauphin helicopter to Chennai.
Senior officials told Business Line that while the helicopter, which is stationed at Vizag was being shifted to Chennai, Pawan Hans would be ready to shift more helicopters to the South if the need arose.
"We are in readiness and can move machines from either Mumbai or Guwahati if the need arises," senior officials said. While it would take about three-to-four hours for a helicopter based in Mumbai to reach Chennai, it would take a bit longer for the helicopter based in the North-East to reach South India, officials said.
Meanwhile, Indian Airlines on Monday operated five flights to Port Blair, including two from Chennai and evacuated 593 passengers. The airline plans to operate seven flights on Tuesday, including two from Chennai to Port Blair. Similarly, Jet Airways on Monday announced that it will fly medical and relief supplies from Government or other recognised voluntary agencies free of charge for rescue and rehabilitation work from Chennai to Port Blair.
