Mangalore , Dec. 28

THE cashew industry is all set to break records in terms of import and export and processing capacity during 2004-05, according to Mr K. Prakash Rao, President of the Mangalore Cashew Manufacturers' Association (MCMA).

According to a release on Tuesday, there has been a growth of 150 per cent in exports and over 200 per cent in imports in the cashew industry.

The proposed action plan of MCMA would result in a solid growth, taking Karnataka's share in the national cashew trade to almost 20 per cent by 2020.

This will provide employment to over 15,000 workers in rural areas, he added.

A vision document, to be presented by Mr Giridhar Prabhu of Achal Cashew Industries at the golden jubilee function of the association on December 30, will include several suggestions on expanding cashew industry threefold by 2020.

It will also suggest measures on increasing the cashew crop in Karnataka from 35,000 tonnes to 1.4 lakh tonnes in another 10 years, he said.

The association will prevail upon the Government to provide necessary impetus to achieve these goals.

The release said that the MCMA, which was established on July 11, 1955 with five cashew processors and three traders, represents 130 units from Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kolar and Belgaum districts.

Members of the association have decided to rename it as Karnataka Cashew Manufacturers' Association, as it is the only association in the State representing the interests of the industry and trade, it added.
