Satyam chief sees scope for significant growth

New Delhi , Dec. 28

SATYAM Computer Services on Tuesday indicated that it has the potential to grow from the existing strength of 20,000 employees to about 50,000 in few years.

"There is a potential — if the markets operate in a favourable manner — for a significant growth to happen for companies like Satyam and others in the industry... The potential is to grow from the current 20,000 to 50,000 in a few years," Mr Ramalinga Raju, Chairman, Satyam Computer Services, said at a FICCI event here.

He did not define the time frame for the growth. "The time period depends on the markets... I am talking about the potential that the country holds for significant growth in various sectors including IT," he added.

Earlier while addressing the FICCI's plenary session on `Vision of the new Economy', Mr Raju said that while the country had proved its capabilities in software and services, it was on the "defensive" when it comes to manufacturing.

"Can't we have one-third of the manufacturing that takes place in China, in India? Players in China are touting their services skills on the back of their manufacturing strength. Can we not do the reverse? We can seek manufacturing opportunities on the back of our software and knowledge strength," he pointed out.
