Unicef supplies relief materials

THE United Nations Children's Fund - Unicef - has started supplying relief materials to those hit by Sunday's tsunami.

Water tanks supplied by it have begun arriving in relief camps in some of the most severely affected areas of southern India, according to a Unicef release.

The first supply of 50 tanks reached Kanchipuram. The agency is responding to requests from the most affected districts of Tamil Nadu to supply more than 1,500 water tanks, each with a capacity of 500 litres. Three million chlorine tablets are being provided along with 1,000 kg of bleaching powder and 50,000 sachets of oral rehydration solution.

Unicef is also supplying 38,000 light blankets and 10,000 cotton sheets.
