New Delhi , Dec. 28

THE Government is to issue temporary visa for tourists arriving in India from the areas worst affected by tsunami disaster. "We have interacted with the Ministry of Home Affairs and they have initiated measures for issuance of temporary visa for people arriving from the areas affected by tsunami," the Minister for Tourism, Ms Renuka Chowdhury, said on Tuesday.

Addressing the meeting, the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, assured that those stranded in the areas affected would not find any problem in getting air seats to safer places.

Later responding to questions, the two Ministers said that there had been no tourist cancellations due to the tsunami disaster.

Meanwhile, both Indian Airlines and Jet Airways are operating special flights to ferry passengers from Port Blair. In a statement IA has said that it would operate 15 relief flights on Wednesday, including seven between Chennai and Port Blair. Besides, the airline has also decided to carry all relief material free of cost.

Similarly, Jet will operate six flights to Port Blair from Chennai and Kolkata on Wednesday.

The airline has decided not to collect cancellation charges for tickets issued for travel on Chennai-Port Blair-Chennai, Kolkata-Port Blair-Kolkata and Chennai-Colombo-Chennai till December 31.
