Shipping Industry & Economy - Natural Calamities Tsunami spares Chennai box terminal Our Bureau
Mumbai , Dec. 28 THE killer tidal wave that struck the Chennai coast has not caused any significant damage to the Chennai Container Terminal (CCT) at the Chennai Port, according to the CCT operator, P&O Ports Ltd. In a statement, the terminal operator reported that two of the quay cranes at the terminal had suffered "contact damage" when the bow of a vessel came in contact with the crane due to a sudden surge of water. Six empty containers were washed away and are in the process of being recovered. "The port authorities are in the process of carrying out a sounding survey of the port area to ensure that no excessive siltation has taken place and that the area is free of hazardous submerged objects. We are awaiting clearance from port authorities for regular shipping movements," a spokesperson of P&O Ports said.
