Calamity committee

First it was the "super cyclone" in Orissa, followed by the devastating earthquake in Bhuj, Gujarat, which left untold misery. Now it is the tsunami waves caused by an earthquake or rather sea quake in the Indian Ocean that has brought life to a standstill along the Coromandel coast of our country, with more damages in Indonesia and Srilanka.

This natural catastrophe is yet another instance to show how unprepared and inadequately equipped we are to render emergency services including financial help to the calamity affected areas. It is high time, the Prime Minister puts in place a `Disaster Committee', comprising selected ministers and headed by himself, entirely devoted to render immediate and prompt service and financial aid during such natural calamities.

R. Sekar
