Letters Serious omission
Recently, one was outraged to hear Mr Kapil Sibal, Minister for Ocean Development, announce smilingly on a television news bulletin that India is not a member of the Early Warning System (EWS) that helps minimise the impact of natural calamities. This is a serious lacuna considering that we have a long coastline inhabited by several fisher-folk and dotted with many beach resorts. Whoever is responsible for not including India in the EWS must be held to account. Global warming has long held out the threat of rising ocean levels that would swallow coastal properties and islands. The recent tsunamis that caused catastrophic destruction to life and property is a result of the indiscriminate mining of coral reef barriers and the destruction of mangrove forests, not to mention the absence of warning systems. Now is the time for all environmental activists to come together and prevail on the Government to take proactive steps to stop the plundering of natural wealth in the name of economic development. L.
