AP to focus on irrigation, land distribution

THE Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said that development of towns with the World Bank assistance, grounding of irrigation projects and distribution of land to the landless would be the thrust areas of his Government in the coming year.
He also said the State Government would consolidate all its programmes such as Jalayagnam, Haritha Andhra Pradesh, Indira Prabha and Rajiv Internet Village next year. Efforts would be made for improving health and allied services and stepping up welfare activities for the benefit of scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, backward classes and minorities.
Dr Reddy told newspersons that the process of holding talks with Naxalites would be continued while ensuring the maintenance of law and order in the State. He said that his Government had been successful in giving a new direction to the State in the last seven months since the Congress party came to power. Priority had been accorded to agriculture and rural development without neglecting the industrial sector.
"We will see to it that every assurance given to the people is fulfilled," he said reiterating that his Government was committed to supply power free-of-cost to the farmers who were using well water to irrigate their agricultural lands.
