Hyderabad , Dec. 30

THE Andhra Pradesh Government would be seeking Rs 314 crore assistance from the Centre for providing relief and rehabilitation to the victims of Sunday's tsunami that claimed the lives of 104 people in the State.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said that an amount of Rs 160 crore would be sought for building 40,000 houses for fishermen who lost their dwellings in the disaster. Besides, the State would require Rs 47 crore for replacing the 47,000 fishing nets lost in the sea, Rs 8.5 crore for repairing the 6,000 boats damaged and Rs 8 crore for giving 2,000 new fishing boats to fishermen who had lost their means of livelihood in the unprecedented tidal waves.

This apart, he said, Rs 50 crore was required for execution of protected water supply scheme and Rs 42 crore needed for repair and relaying of roads in the affected villages. The Government would also ask the Government to sanction Rs 5.2 crore towards miscellaneous expenditure and release 19,500 tonnes of rice to provide succour to the people.

The Chief Minister told newspersons here that a memorandum to this effect would be submitted to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, when the latter visits the affected areas in the State on Friday.

Replying to a question, he said that the Government on Thursday evacuated all people living within the vicinity of two kilometres from the sea following a warning issued by the Centre that there was a likelihood of yet another tsunami striking coastal areas.
