Seafood is safe: CIFT

Our Bureau

Kochi , Dec. 31

FOLLOWING reports that it is unsafe to eat seafood after the tsunami struck the Indian coastline, the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) has come out with a categorical statement that "the fish is as safe as it used to be and we can continue to eat fish with confidence. It is very safe."

The statement said certain vested interests were spreading rumours that a dangerous virus called `zulican' was spreading through seafood. The scientists of CIFT have searched all available sources including the sites of the US Food and Drugs Administration and Centre for Disease Control, Atlanta USA and found that there is no virus called zulican ever known to man.

"It is very unfortunate that even in this period of crisis there are people who want to increase the miseries of the coastal poor," the statement added.
