AP Govt order to facilitate official involvement of NGOs

THE Andhra Pradesh Government has issued a Government Order (G.O.), facilitating the official involvement of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), in relief operations.

The G.O. was handed over to a group of NGOs by Mr A.K. Goel, Principal Secretary (Planning), in the presence of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

The move would allow synergy between the services of the Government and NGOs for the victims of natural calamities. Mr C.S. Reddy of the AP Mahila Abhivrudhi Society, an NGO, said this was the first time that a State Government had taken such a bold initiative.

The Chief Minister urged the NGOs to be involved not just in relief operations during calamities, but also in developmental activities in general. He pointed out their role in housing, supply of drinking water etc., according to an official press release.
