Oil PSUs lead in donations for tsunami relief

TAKING the lead among companies that have decided to make donations for helping tsunami victims, oil public sector companies today announced Rs 55 crore contribution to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

An official statement said that while Indian Oil Corporation and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation have decided to donate Rs 15 crore each, HPCL and BPCL are contributing Rs 7.5 crore each, and GAIL Rs 5 crore. The Chennai-based CPCL and the Kochi-based KRL have decided to donate Rs 2.5 crore each.

In a similar gesture, all ranks of the Army have decided to donate a day's salary for the national relief efforts to the PM's fund, whereas the Citigroup Foundation has announced a $3 million donation for helping tsunami victims across South Asia.

Other companies pitching in with donations include Computer Associates International Inc donating $2,00,000 to UNICEF for relief work, Coca-Cola India Rs 10 lakh, Ambuja Cements Rs 1 crore, Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Rs 25 lakh, Havell's India Rs 11 lakh, Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilisers Company Ltd Rs 1.25 crore, LG Electronics Rs 50 lakh, FCI and Vedanta Resources Plc each Rs 1 crore.

More contributions

MUMBAI: The Hyderabad-based cargo and logistics major Gati Ltd has offered to carry clothes, food and other relief material free of cost in its cargo ships from Chennai to Port Blair.

General Insurance Corporation (GIC) has contributed Rs 1 crore to the PM's Relief Fund. Mr P.C. Ghosh, Chairman of GIC, presented the cheque to the Union Finance Minister in the Capital.

Great Eastern Shipping has also contributed Rs 1 crore to the relief fund, while Goodlass Nerolac Paints Ltd is contributing Rs 10 lakh.

Visa Asia Pacific has donated $2.5 lakh to the International Red Cross towards the Tsunami Relief Fund, with many of its member banks also joining to make substantial contributions.
