Nayak Mahal reopened

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Jan. 2

ONE of the major tourists spots in the city, Tirumalai Nayak Mahal, has been reopened to the public after renovation.

Built in 1523 by the Nayak dynasty and located about one km from the renowned Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple, this Indo-Saracenic structure, housing a palatial edifice, was temporarily closed to facilitate renovation at an outlay of Rs 1 crore, provided under the XI Finance Commission.

The sum has been largely utilised to refurbish the massive pillars in the court hall at the entrance.

The `sound and light' show on the life of Tirumalai Nayak is an added attraction.

Foreign adults and children below 12 years of age are charged Rs 50 and Rs 25 each, respectively, as entrance fee.

Domestic tourists are charged Rs 10 and children are charged Rs 5.

The visiting time is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The District Collector, Mr D. Raajendiran, rededicated the mahal to the public and tourists at a function held in the city on Saturday.
